Product Updates

Have you ever created something that you thought was amazing? Have you ever looked back on it a few years later and realized that it was actually terrible?

That’s how I feel about my products related to Common Core standards on TPT! I was so proud of everything I created and uploaded (seven years ago)! Now when I am looking back through everything I am cringing at the level the products are at.

Which means it is time for an update!

Updating products with Common Core Standards

I have been spending most nights working through my old products, one at a time, and updating them. Editing the format, updating the graphics and images, and making them look cleaner. I am proud to say that I have finished three of them!

Keep reading for a peek at the updates I did for these products.

RI.1.9

When I first taught this Common Core standard I was overwhelmed by the amount of books I needed so the students had enough practice. I spent so much time flagging specific pages that I planned to read in each book. Then one glorious year, I figured out how to put this standard into a PowerPoint with tons of examples. Needless to say, I never looked back!

This unit introduces students to the concept of identifying similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic. Over the course of three days, students are able to have ample amount of practice through guided PowerPoints. The unit also includes leveled worksheets for independent practice each day and an assessment.

RL.1.3

This is one of my favorite Common Core standards to teach! Students do this automatically when they talk about books, shows, or movies. We always work on retelling stories during a read-aloud. Sometimes it is nice to have the opportunity to specifically teach exactly what you mean within a standard.

This unit walks students through describing characters, settings, and events in a short text. Over the course of three days, students are able to practice describing these story elements in manageable segments. This is done with guided PowerPoints – along with leveled worksheets for independent practice each day and an assessment.

RI.1.6

This one is a Common Core standard that can often be taught within other lessons or during a think-aloud. Many years I needed to take a couple of days to specifically teach exactly what this standard meant. Once I took the time to do that, students could easily identify and distinguish between information from the author and the photographer.

This unit teaches students how to determine whether the information is from the author of the photographer. Then, it asks them to identify information provided by each. This is done over three days through the use of guided PowerPoints and a whole group activity. Of course, leveled worksheets for independent practice each day are included with an assessment at the end.

So what’s next?

I have three more products that I am almost finished updating – be on the lookout for them:

Central Message Unit (RL.1.2)

Comparing Two Texts on the Same Topic Extension (RI.1.9)

Main Idea Introduction (RI.1.2)

I hope to be finished with all of them by the end of August!
